In Their Own Words
Siew-Hwee Ng

"I joined the Pre-Retirement Reading Programme after my husband and I realised we were using CPF terms interchangeably without really understanding the distinctions. Twelve weeks is a proper commitment, but the pace is manageable — one chapter a week is genuinely doable alongside work. By week six I felt I could hold a real conversation about CPF Life structures without needing to look things up."

"The Singapore Savings Schemes reading group was the right starting point for me. Three sessions is short enough that you can commit without upending your schedule. What I appreciated was that the facilitator never pushed us toward any particular view — we read the MAS and CPF Board documents and discussed what they actually said. That approach suits me well."

"I had tried reading about the SRS on my own but kept losing the thread. Having a cohort to discuss it with changes the experience considerably. When someone in the group asks a question you had not thought to ask, you realise how much clearer the picture becomes. The vocabulary cards from the binder are still on my desk three months later."

"The Family Money Meetings workshop was something my wife and I attended together. That was probably the right call — going through the meeting simulations with your actual family member beside you is quite different from doing it with strangers. The playbook is practical. We have used the agenda template twice since the workshop."

"I was sceptical about a twelve-week programme — it seemed like a long time. But the structure made sense once I was in it. Each week builds naturally on the last, and having only twelve people in the room means you actually know the others by week three. I am now considerably more confident discussing these topics with my children."

"I appreciated that Tarrith did not try to tell us what to do with our money. The reading group is what it says it is — a group that reads and discusses. The facilitator was honest when she did not know the answer to something, and pointed us to the relevant official source to look it up. That felt right."

Participant Journeys
How Participants Came to Tarrith
Case Study · Pre-Retirement Reading Programme
The Starting Point
A retired civil servant, 58, was preparing for CPF payout decisions and found the published documentation difficult to read in isolation. She had attended two financial planning seminars but found both were structured around product presentations rather than vocabulary building.
What She Did
She enrolled in the twelve-week Pre-Retirement Reading Programme. Over three months, she read each chapter in advance and participated in weekly discussions with eleven other participants at similar life stages.
What Changed
By programme close, she described herself as able to read CPF correspondence with confidence and to ask more specific questions when subsequently meeting with her own financial adviser. The vocabulary had become navigable rather than foreign.
"I did not expect to enjoy the group discussions as much as I did. The mix of people in the cohort — different working backgrounds, different levels of familiarity — made the conversations genuinely useful."
Case Study · Family Money Meetings Workshop
The Starting Point
A couple in their early fifties — one a teacher, one a small business owner — had been putting off household financial conversations for years. Each time they raised the topic it became either uncomfortable or inconclusive. They had no structure for the conversation.
What They Did
They attended the weekend Family Money Meetings Workshop together. They worked through structured meeting simulations with two other participant pairs, practised agenda preparation, and received copies of the printed playbook and templates.
What Changed
Three months after the workshop, they had held two structured household meetings using the agenda format from the playbook. They described the quarterly reflection circle — held six weeks after the workshop — as useful for reviewing what had and had not worked.
"The agenda template sounds like a simple thing. But having something to work from changed the whole tone of the conversation. We stopped talking at each other and started working through a list."
